Beyond scores and stats, basketball gives rise to stories of athletes who overcome obstacles, exhibit sportsmanship, and defy the odds to achieve success. This band of incredible athletes, the Providence Wolverines, represent the very best in determination, perseverance, and greatness. While they practice year round, the team puts it all on the line during the Winter Season at Special Olympics and invitational tournaments.
If you are an adult, over the age of 18, with a developmental disability, and want to play basketball not only for the fun of it, but because you want to be part of a team that places collective spirit over personal gain -- consider joining the Wolverines.
Our Wolverines competitive team won gold at the Special Olympics Virginia 2024 Basketball Championships in Richmond, Virginia.
The Wolverines are our competitive team. During the months of January, February, and March they face other Special Olympics teams across Virginia in tournaments. The Wolves practice alongside the Wolverines, developing the skills and stamina required for competitive play in the future. Together, the Wolves and Wolverines form what we call "The Providence Pack."
We practice every Monday at the Jim Scott (formerly Providence) Community Center from 6:15 to 7:15 PM. This is a wonderful, relatively new, and convenient Fairfax County facility with incredible staff who help ensure our kids practice in a safe and modern environment.
Our Coaches teach the skills and spirit that define a true athlete. They strive to be role models and character-builders. Because they are Special Olympics coaches they go even further -- they help our athletes find their own strengths and abilities. They also show them how to build upon those strengths and improve every day.
Head Coach Chris Harrison brings enthusiasm, commitment, and a positive attitude to each practice, event, and competition. Having played NCAA Division I basketball while attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Coach Chris exemplifies what it means to be an exceptional leader with the necessary empathy to inspire understanding and knowledge in team members.
